How Website Speed Affects Business Performance
Measure slow journeys, distinguish field and lab data, and prioritise fixes without inventing conversion promises.

Website speed affects how long people wait before they can understand and use a page. Slow loading or delayed interactions can add friction to an enquiry journey, but there is no universal percentage increase in sales that every business should expect from a faster site.
Measure the journey, not one score
Test the landing page, service detail and enquiry form. Use mobile conditions that reflect your audience. A fast homepage does not compensate for an unresponsive booking screen. Record where the delay appears: document response, a large image, client-side work or an external service.
Understand the measurements
Core Web Vitals cover loading, interaction responsiveness and visual stability through LCP, INP and CLS. Lab tools help investigate under controlled conditions; field data reflects actual visits and may not be available for every low-traffic page. Treat a missing field report as missing evidence, not an automatic pass.
Prioritise the largest practical bottleneck
A large hero image can compete with useful content. Resize and compress media, provide appropriate image dimensions and avoid loading optional scripts before they are needed. If heavy JavaScript blocks interaction, reducing image bytes alone may not resolve the delay. Diagnose before changing infrastructure.
Protect the outcome while optimising
Do not remove essential explanations, form validation or accessibility behaviour merely to improve a score. Test the same successful enquiry after each change. Check that content does not jump while media loads and that the main action remains available on a small phone.
Connect performance to business evidence
Record enquiry completion and meaningful lead quality alongside performance. Compare similar traffic periods and note campaign or content changes that can influence the result. A before-and-after comparison can suggest an effect but is not automatically a controlled experiment.
Start with the slowest important step, make one bounded improvement and measure again. Understanding Core Web Vitals explains the metrics in more detail.
