Website vs Web Application: What's the Difference?
Decide whether your project needs content pages, authenticated workflows or a combination of both.

A website mainly helps people find and consume information. A web application lets them carry out a process, usually with saved state, validation and permissions. The boundary is not absolute: a business website may contain a booking application, while an application may have public marketing pages.
Look at the visitor's task
Reading a service description and sending a basic enquiry usually fits a content-focused website. Checking appointment availability, reserving a slot and managing changes creates a workflow. Ask what must be stored, who may change it and what happens when an operation fails.
Identify the responsibilities behind the screen
| Requirement | Why it changes the project |
|---|---|
| Sign-in and roles | Access must be checked on the server |
| Persistent records | Data needs modelling, backups and recovery |
| Availability or stock | Concurrent requests can conflict |
| Payments or integrations | Failures need reconciliation and support |
A prototype showing the correct screens does not prove these responsibilities are implemented. Test whether a user can access another customer's record, submit twice or return after a connection drops.
Decide the smallest sensible architecture
A small marketing website does not automatically need a custom database. A private operations portal should not be built as a collection of loosely connected forms without ownership rules. Sometimes the best solution is a content site linked to an existing booking or CRM platform. Evaluate the whole journey, including accessibility and the handoff between products.
Plan the operating model
For an application, assign responsibility for incidents, account removal, database changes and integration monitoring. Agree how updates are tested and rolled back. For a content website, still plan content ownership, security updates and enquiry delivery checks.
Write a task-based brief
List three important user tasks and their successful outcomes. Include an error case for each. This is a better starting point than asking for a specific technology because another company uses it. See the web application development process when the project includes operational workflows.
